I received my medical degree from the University of Birmingham, UK in 1999. I went on to complete my postgraduate Paediatric training in Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK and KK Womens’ and Children’s Hospital, Singapore obtaining membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (London) in 2004. Following that, I continued my advanced specialist training in both Paediatrics and Neonatology, becoming one of the first doctors in Singapore to receive advanced accreditation in both specialties.
After nearly ten years at KK Hospital, I worked at International Paediatric Clinic, serving a diverse international paediatric patient population for over 5 years. I am now practising with Singapore Baby and Child Clinic (SBCC). My areas of specialist interest are neonatal medicine, including neonatal intensive care, early childhood development and childhood nutrition. I am a passionate advocate of breastfeeding, and as a mother of three, have a wealth of personal practical knowledge and experience.
I served as Clinical Lecturer at both the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin undergraduate medical school and the Duke-NUS postgraduate medical school for several years, as well as personally mentoring many junior doctors. My research has won awards at several regional conferences, and I have had the privilege of being an invited speaker at an international congress. I continue to serve as a regular contributor and member of the editorial advisory board for Young Parents magazine (the largest parenting magazine in Singapore), which I have done for over 5 years; I continue to be committed to patient education.

Hi doctor Natalie, i really need your help. My 7 year old daughter still not potty trained. She can urine in the toilet fine but does the rest in her pants. Not wearing diapers since 4 years old but this problem never went away. Please help…..
Hi Worried,
Sorry to hear about your problem. Actually, this is a pretty common issue that many parents struggle with.
Firstly, I would make sure your child doesn’t have underlying constipation which may be contributing to the problem.
Then talk to your child about how this makes her feel- very often, children will want the problem to be fixed. Discuss a reward-based strategy such as a star chart to motivate the behaviour you want. Put a star on the chart for every day she poops in the toilet, and you can negotiate a ‘treat” for 5 stars in a row. Good examples of treats include reading a book with Mommy, a trip to the park or other special place.
Remember to praise the behaviour you do want, and ignore the behaviour you don’t. Occasionally, children may use negative behaviours as a way to get parental attention. Try not to make it a big deal. The more you downplay it, the less stressful it will be- for both of you!
All the best,
Doctor Natalie

Ok thx u so much!
Dear Natalie,
My 3 week old makes sounds from the throat that sounds like “blowing air from the throat” during times when he’s awake moving his limbs around or during feeding. These sounds sometimes become audible like a cute squeak. We feel slightly concerned ibeing first time parents if these shouldn’t be breathing issues. Although when he sleeps, he sleeps peacefully without these sounds.
Are these normal?
Thanks a bunch.
Hi Varun,
Congratulations on the birth of your baby.
Since your baby doesn’t have these noises when asleep it doesn’t sound too worrying. However, you should ask your doctor or health visitor to check on your next wellness visit.
The advice in these pages is meant to offer general support, and should not replace visits and check ups with your usual doctor or health visitor- especially if you have concerns.
All the best,
Natalie
